Osmotic hemolysis of chemically modified red blood cells.
T HE MECHANISM of osmotic hemolysis of red cells has been a subject for discussion for many years. Much of the discussion has centered on the question of whether hemoglobin diffuses out of the cell by way of a single large break in the membrane, or by way of many small openings. Kochen5 using light microscopy and a dye which formed a precipitate with hemoglobin, observed what appeared to be a s...

Determination of hemolysis, osmotic fragility and fluorescence anisotropy on irradiated red blood cells as a function of kV of medical diagnostic X-rays
Background: People occasionally undergo medical diagnostic X-ray examinations and expose their red blood cells to radiation. Radiation that is generated from medical diagnostic X-ray machines is widely used in medical diagnoses. One of the important parameters is kilo-voltage (kV) that is applied across the X-ray tube in medical diagnostic X-ray machines. Kilo-voltage influences the radiation d...
The Osmotic Behavior of Crenated Red Cells
The anomalously small swelling which the red cells of human oxalated blood undergo in hypotonic plasma is related to the extent to which the cells are crenated. Reasons are given for regarding crenation as corresponding to gelation, and the bulk modulus for crenated cells, calculated from the measurements of swelling in hypotonic plasma, is shown to be of the same order as that for gelatin gels.
